TOPPENISH —The Toppenish Parks and Recreation Director is seeking community feedback about the need for a skate park in the city.
James Cole said last week that over the last year or so, he has collected the names and contact information for 34 skate boarders who have expressed an interest in seeing a skate park built here, but he wants to find out the reaction of the community to such a facility.
Cole said he has observed skate boarders skating in the vicinity of parked vehicles and in other areas where the activity could cause injuries to the participants, as well as damage to private property.
He sees a potential benefit in providing a place to skate that would be safe, secure and visible as well, but out of people’s way, he said.
Cole said he wants to find out if people in the community are interested in building a park of this kind, or if there is opposition to it.
In a meeting of the Parks and Recreation Board of Directors last week, the decision was made to hold a community forum about a skate park Thursday, March 12, at 6 p.m. in the city council chambers at city hall.
Anyone with comments about the need for a skate park is welcome to attend.
Cole can be reached at Parks and Rec at 865-5150.
