GRANGER — Nine scholarship recipients from Granger High School were honored during the 46th Annual Alumni Banquet on Saturday.
Students and their families were invited to a catered dinner hosted by the Granger Alumni Association (GAA). Students were individually introduced and a brief bio was read for each student. Scholarships have been named after respected alum.
“Thank you for your support in our quest for knowledge, and for allowing us to pursue our goals so we can help people like your association does,” Mynor Lopez, a student and scholarship recipient said.
The banquet also serves as the GAA’s annual business meeting. President of the GAA board, Diane Pearson announced the board had four vacant spots and only three nominations. Alyssa Simonsen, Karen Anderson, and Tamara Parker were nominated and voted on to the GAA board. A nomination from the floor for Chuck Alexander was made and he accepted. Alexander was voted to serve on the board.
Tim Dunn, superintendent, announced that the Granger school district was awarded as one of the top 30 schools in the nation, a model school. Dunn boasted that the city of Granger was also voted one of the 100 best communities nationwide.
“Eight years ago we were graduating at 60 percent and last year we graduated 96 percent,” Dunn said.
Dinner was served by the FFA students and advisor. A gratuity was taken as a fundraiser for their yearly competitions.
“FFA has been a tremendous help to the Alumni Association,” Diane Pearson President of the board of GAA said.
Last years banquet housed 315 guests. The scholarships awarded since 1964 total $155,785. This year, a total of $13,500 was invested into the future of these outstanding students.
Margaret Eddie recognized the alumni who attended. The banquet finished in honoring Janie Cardenas as she resigned from the GAA board.
