The body of a Wapato man reported missing June 7 was found June 10, at about 6:45 a.m., off North Harrah Road, according to a Yakima County Sheriff’s Office report.
The body of Salvador Lopez Lopez, 20, was found on an access road near a hop field north of West Wapato Road, with a gunshot wound to the chest, and Lt. Max James of the Sheriff’s Office said an investigation determined that the wound was self-inflicted.
The victim’s car, a blue Honda, was near the body, and James said it appeared that the body had been there for “two or three days,” before it was found.
James said it appeared that the victim arrived at the scene in his vehicle.
The report said identification of the victim was aided by an incident report filed at the Wapato Police Department June 7, and a tattoo.
Wapato Police Chief Rick Sanchez said officers from his department attempted to locate Lopez by trying to trace a text message from him June 7, but were unsuccessful.
Sanchez said family members chose not to pursue further attempts to locate Lopez.
An autopsy was conducted on Lopez June 11, and Yakima County Coroner Jack Hawkins said Lopez died from a bullet wound to the heart.
