A drenching rain at the start of their commencement ceremonies failed to dampen the spirits of the 149 Toppenish High graduates on Friday, June 12.
Using umbrellas to shield them from the heavy rain, commencement speakers Rachel Huylar, Anthony Galaviz, Jr., Diego Guel, Stacey Kobes, Janet Moran-Padilla and Luz Rodriguez spanned the class’s history from kindergarten to its four years at Top-Hi before offering words of encouragement as they stepped forward into their new lives. Several offered spiritual words from scripture and most gave personal, often humorous antidotes about the lives of classmates during their four years in high school.
The graduates were encouraged to be themselves, pursue their dreams and celebrate their successes.
Trevor Greene, Toppenish High principal noted the class of 2009 has achieved several firsts – the first class to graduate in the new Toppenish High stadium, the first to graduate in the rain and the first class to earn more than $1.4 million in scholarships.
According to Greene, 83 percent of the 2009 graduating class plan to attend college, with nine percent heading in the military or apprenticeship programs.
“I’m proud of you,” Greene said as he addressed the graduates for the final time. “As you go forward, always remember to not settle for good enough. Do it the “Wildcat way” and strive for something more.”
In keeping with Top-Hi tradion, Charles Askins   was awarded the faculty service pin, which was presented by Huylar.
