The Toppenish Tarpons swim team ended the season as they powered to the Mid-Valley Swim Championships as League Champions with a 10-0 record.
The team took home the titles of Championship winners, and the Sportsmanship award. The Sportsmanship trophy is awarded to the team based on character and was chosen by the coaches of the league.
Head coach Selena Galaviz celebrated her seventh and final year of coaching. Galaviz is leaving to continue her education.
“It’s been a good last year,” Galaviz said. “The swimmers and their support system keep the team running.”
“I think the parent support of our team has really made the difference in our success as a team,” added Leanne Galaviz.
Of the 400 swimmers registered for the championship meet, 105 were Tarpon swimmers. The top eight swimmers from each age group throughout the league are selected to compete in the final races. “There were 48 heats of finals and our swimmers were in 46 of those,” coach Selena Galaviz said.
Several of the Tarpon swimmers broke championship pool records: Nathan Koerner in the10 and under boys backstroke and butterfly; Bethany Imperial who competed in the 14 and under girls freestyle, backstroke and butterfly; Anthony Galaviz who swam in the18 and under boys freestyle; and the Tarpons 10 and under boys freestyle relay team of Koerner, Sam Clark, Bridger Delp, Jonathon Imperial
The Tarpons celebrated their win and the end of their season with high-fives and three team trophies.
