The Zillah city council did some trash talking last week during it council meeting.
During the council workshop study session, Scott Robertson of Yakima Waste explained his company’s rate increase.
According Robertson and city officials during the meeting, a 14 percent increase in county tipping fees at the Cheyne landfill is a major factor in the increase in city garbage rates.
For Zillah residents, the city will be raising garbage fees five percent effective Jan. 1, 2010. For city residents with the basic  two containers account, the fee will increase from $12.50 per month to $13.25. Extra garbage will now cost $2.75 per item.
Large 96 gallon yard waste containers will now cost $8.50 a month. Commercial accounts, large container rates and yard box fees will all be raised by five percent.
Under the new ordinance, all residences, commercial establishments and industrial businesses will now be assessed a garbage fee, regardless if the garbage containers are utilized. The non-use assessment is new to the city’ garbage ordinance.
During the meeting, the council also approved a city’s tax levy rate for 2010 for both real and personal property. The yearly levy includes adjustments for new construction, new construction and improvements to property and assessed valuation increased.
The council approved a new rate for 2010 at .8622 percent. The new tax rate will bring in an additional $22,724 more than 2009.
The council also met in an executive session for 20 minutes during the council meeting to discuss potential legal litigation, however no action was taken during the executive session.
The city had the first of three public hearing to discuss the 2010 city budget. No public input was given. Two additional hearing on the proposed budget will be Nov. 16 and Dec. 7, prior to the council’s final approval.
