Several familiar faces – along with a few new faces – will take office in the coming weeks and months following the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
A rundown of local races include:
Granger
City Council
Newcomer Julie Anderson-Sharpe will take a seat on the Granger council after defeating incumbent Natalie Ybarra. Anderson-Sharpe easily won the council race with a 65 to 35 percent margin. Incumbent Donna Shipman defeated challenger Janie Cruz by a 60 to 40 percent margin. Marisol Castro was unopposed and will retain her seat on the Granger City Council. She picked up 88 votes.
Granger School board
Both Ray H. Hull and Kyle E. Shinn will return to their school board seats after the pair went unopposed during the election. Hull received 321 votes while Shinn picked up 320.
Harrah
Town of Harrah
Peter Touhey and Santos Castilleja were both unopposed and easily won election to the two open seats on the Harrah Town Council. Touhey received 45 votes, while Castilleja had 40.
Mt. Adams School District
Three candidates – all unopposed were elected to the Mt. Adams School board. Serving Mt. Adams School District will be Gregory J. Bailey who received 215 votes, Kip Ramsey, Jr., picked up 215 votes and Richard Simmons earned 213 ballots.
Toppenish
Former Toppenish Councilwoman Clara Jimenez will return to the Toppenish Council in January. Jimenez defeated longtime Toppenish resident Karen Rogers for the open seat. Jimenez received 57 percent of the vote while Rogers picked up 33 percent.
Councilman Mark Oaks had a slim two percent lead in a tight race against challenger Christian Kwan for Toppenish City Council position 7. Oaks was appointed to the post in August. The council selected Oaks over Kwan for the spot on the council.
In the third contested council race, Robert Thomas is leading James Schmidt, even though Thomas announced in September he was withdrawing from the race due to health concerns. Thomas has told the media he will not take the position on the council, which may leave the seat open for reappointment in January.
In two uncontested races, Blaine Thorington and Derald Ortloff will round out the Toppenish council after both easily won re-elections.
Toppenish School board
In the one contested school board race, incumbent Richard Lommers defeated Anna Ward. Lommers picked up 52 percent of the vote to retain his seat.
Bill Rogers and MaryRose Gonzales were both unopposed and will return to the Toppenish School board. Rogers received 604 votes, Gonzalez, 646.
Wapato
Filling five seats on the Wapato City Council will be Arnulfo Valdez, Rita Zuniga, Rufugio Roa, Frank Jaime and Juan De La Torre who were all unopposed. The council still has an open seat to fill, after no candidates filing during the regular filing period or the special filing in August.
Wapato School Board
Javier Vela and Joanne Estes were both unopposed and will fill the District 1 and 2 seats on the Wapato School board.
Zillah
Zillah City Council
Zillah Mayor Gary Clark and current council members Bob Gallagher, Jeff Mills and Chad Crossley will retain their seats after running unopposed in the election.
Zillah School Board
Newcomer Chris Van Antwerp, who previously served on the Zillah School board, is returning to fill an open spot. Van Antwerp was unopposed and will join Darrin Belton, Sandra Adams and Dennis Jones, all three current board members who were all unopposed.
