Joint potato conference planned in Tri-Cities

The first annual Washington-Oregon Potato conference will take place in late January in the Tri-Cities.
According to the officials from the Washington State Potato conference, the 2010 conference will be Jan. 26, 27 and 28 at Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick.
Todd Buchholz, an entrepreneur, author, educator and former White House economic policy advisor will present the keynote address at the first annual conference luncheon on Wednesday, Jan. 27. The luncheon will begin at 11 a.m.
• Banquet:
The annual Leadership Recognition banquet will be Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Red Lion in Kennewick. A portion of the banquet proceeds will fund the Excellence in Agriculture scholarship program. Individual tickets along with table sponsors are available by contacting the Washington State Potato Foundation.
• General Sessions:
The general sessions for the 2010 event will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Sessions continue at various intervals with a break for lunch at 11 a.m. Sessions continue from 1 to 4 p.m. with additional sessions on a variety of grower topics on Thursday, Jan. 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday’s luncheon event will be a panel discussion with moderator Tim Waters.
• Spanish program:
The three-day event kicks on Jan. 26 with a Spanish language session from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The comprehensive program will feature a safety workshop for Spanish speaking workers, but is limited to the first 50 participants. Among the safety topics are safety attitudes, farm equipment safety, fumigants, plant physiology and reading and understanding pesticide labels. The cost of the Spanish portion of the program is $5 and includes lunch on site. The deadline to register for the Spanish program is Jan. 23.
• Trade Show:
The trade show, featuring more than 100 exhibitors with the latest farm and ranch equipment, products and services will begin at noon on Jan. 26. The trade show continues on Jan. 27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Jan. 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Various exhibitors will offer free drawings, raffles and discounts on products and services during the conference. The trade show reception and PAC auction will be Tuesday, Jan. 26 from 5 to 8 p.m.
• Women’s Program:
The ladies program has been a popular part of previous potato conventions. This year’s ladies program will be Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 2010 Ladies program theme is “Wine, Dine and Dance.” Ladies will enjoy learning the salsa with instructors from the Salsa Con Rumba Dance Company. The Ladies luncheon will include a special lunch prepared by Chef Frank Chullino of Taverna Tagaris. A wine tour and wine tasting will be from the cellars of Tagaris Winery. Registration for the Women’s program is $50 per person, with registrations due by Jan. 20.
• Workshops
One of the annual potato conference trademark events is the Cultivar Performance workshop. Cultivar displays including a chance to view the clones and cultivars for this year’s trials will begin on Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. Following the cultivar displays will be a discussion on field performance and agronomy updates of new clones and cultivars at 2:20, storability and processing quality at 2:45 p.m., new potato cultivars and performances in Hermiston at 3:10 and evaluating baby potatoes at 3:35 p.m.
