A 22-year-old Toppenish man has died and three local men are wanted for questioning in what local police are calling a gang related shooting over the weekend.
According to Toppenish Police Department officers, Ladislado Avila, died Monday, Dec. 7 at Yakima Memorial Hospital after he was shot in the head during a drive-by shooting on Washington Avenue in Toppenish early Saturday morning, Dec. 5.
Police officers initially responded to the 500 block of Washington Avenue where they found Avila and three of his friends in a car that had crashed into a tree.
The three individuals with Avila told the responding officers that they were traveling eastbound on Washington Avenue with Avila driving when an occupant riding in a teal or gray-colored Honda traveling behind them began firing several shots at them.
One of the bullets struck Avila in the head, causing him to then go off the road and strike the tree.
Avila was taken by ambulance to Yakima Memorial Hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition, before dying on Monday morning from his injuries.
Toppenish police detectives are looking for three individuals in connection with the shooting – David Sandoval, 19, of Toppenish, along with Fabian Arredondo, 20, and Justin Cavasos, also 20, both residents of Zillah.
Detectives said that all three men are documented gang members and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Police are also looking for a newer, silver Chrysler 300 with chrome wheels.
Anyone with information on the three individuals wanted for questioning in the case are asked to please contact the Toppenish Police Department at (509) 865-4355.
