Two-time state champion Chris Castillo and teammate Kyle Kluever won titles to lead the Zillah Leopards to the team championship at the 37th annual Wapato Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 9.
Powered by eight additional top three placers, the Leopards racked up 237 points to 178 points for second place Kentridge and 177.5 points for the Toppenish Wildcats. Toppenish put in an impressive showing considering they were without several of their best wrestlers. Aaron Arredondo (119) and Julian Romero (130) won championships. Placing second were George Pech (145), Nick Alvarado (171) and Luis Rodriguiz (285).
The featured match during the tournament was Top-Hi junior Julian Romero against the Leopard’s former state champion Skylor Davis. Romero won the event by scoring a pin late in the first round. Romero is a two-time state medalist and Davis is rated the state’s best in his 130-pound weight division.
Granger had a strong fourth place with 172.5 points and was led by three champions – Joshua Salcedo (103), Jonathan Salcedo (112) and Pete Almaguer (285).
Host team Wapato finished seventh with 91.5 points, led by 140-champion Eduardo Torres and Wolves teammate Omar Gomez, who placed second at 103.
The Wapato Invitational is the only time during the season that the Zillah, Toppenish, Granger and Wapato Teams all compete against each other.
