The Wapato Wolves kept things interesting in the CWAC standings with a sweep over two league opponents this past weekend. Wapato has a 4-2 league record, 5-3 for the season and are tied for third with Grandview behind Ephrata (6-0) and Selah (5-1).
In Prosser on Saturday, Jan. 9, the Wolves overcame a pesky Mustang team 69-63. Prosser (1-5) was able to stay within 10 points the entire night. Wapato’s vaunted defensive pressure kept the Mustangs at bay forcing numerous turnovers, but Prosser kept hitting three-pointers and free throws to keep them in the game.
Four Wapato players scored in double-digit figures -- Matt Guevara scored 18 points, with Efrain Reynoso and Rigo Alvarado both adding 13 and senior transfer Greg Strom had 12. Wapato was without starter Jacoby Howe. Prosser’s Blake Milne scored 22 points, mostly from long-range three pointers, which kept the Mustangs close.
On Friday, Jan. 8, Wapato traveled to Othello and beat the Huskies, 79-68. The Wolves were led by Guevara, who scored 26 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
