Despite a tough weekend schedule, the Wapato Wolves played with confidence and upset the No. 2 ranked and undefeated Ephrata 70-66 on Friday night.
The team then avenged an earlier loss to Grandview and beat the Greyhounds on  Saturday night 68-57.  Two wins up  the Wolves CWAC league record at 8-2 behind league Ephrata and Selah, both 9-1 and 9-3.
On Friday night at home, Wapato had to contend with Ephrata’s Patrick Simon, a  6-9 all-state standout  who scored 30 points and pulled down nine rebounds against the smaller Wolves. Simon is headed to Washington State University in the fall.
Wapato matched the Tigers’ height with confidence and determination as Matt Guevara  scored 30 points and Rigo Alvarado added 21.  Alvarado’s scoring came primarily on from his 3-point shooting which came at critical times during the game.  It was truly a team effort on the defensive side by Wapato that seemed to affect Ephrata most of the night.
Wapato’s fans were not to be denied the win after backing their team during the entire night.  They could feel the upset coming as the Wolves kept Ephrata at bay most of the evening.
When the game seemed to be turning in the Tigers favor with less four minutes remaining to play in the final quarter and Ephrata leading 62-58, Jacoby Howe, Greg Strom, Alvarado and Guevara kept their composure and made key baskets down the stretch.  Alvarado made a critical three-pointer with 1:06 remaining in the game which put Wapato in the lead 66-64.  Guevara followed with a 10-foot bank shot.  Ephrata had their problems with Guevara most of the night.
On Saturday in Wapato, the Wolves picked up where they left off the night before and raced to a 68-57 victory over Grandview.
Five Wapato players led the Wolves to victory with double-digit scoring.  Alvarado and Howe both scored 14 points, Guevara had 13, with  Efrain Reynoso and Cliff Smiscon each picked up 11 points.
