Two injured in local shootings

Two men are hospitalized in area hospitals for gun shot wounds in separate shootings in Toppenish and Wapato.
Toppenish shooting
Toppenish Police are looking for a 20-year-old Toppenish man involved in a shooting on East Toppenish Avenue on Saturday, Feb. 27.
According to a report from the Toppenish Police Department, police responded to the Toppenish Community Hospital at 8:30 p.m. after the victim sought treatment for a gunshot wound.
The victim told police he had stopped his vehicle in the 500 block of E. Toppenish Avenue when a man inside a blue van stepped out of the van and fired several shots at the victim’s car. The victim was struck once in the torso, but was able to drive away from the scene and to the hospital. He is listed in stable condition.
Toppenish Police have identified the suspect in the shooting as Ricardo D. Ruiz. He is listed as a Hispanic male, between 5 feet 6 and 5 feet 9 inches tall.
Ruiz has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and other firearms related charges. Ruiz is currently at large and police consider him armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Toppenish Police Department at (509) 865-4355.
Wapato shooting
A 28-year-old Wapato man was seriously injured after being shot at a residence in the 4500 block of North Track Road on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Wapato police officers responded to the call at 9 p.m. at the residence, which is inside the city limits. According to the police report, the victim was visiting at the home and was sitting inside when unknown subjects drove by the residence and fired several shots, striking the man once in the head. The victim was taken by ambulance to Yakima Regional Hospital, where he is listed in stable by critical condition.
Due to the severity of the victim’s injuries, the Wapato Police Department has requested the Yakima County Sheriff’s office investigate the case.
