Yakima County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for several individuals who were riding in a car on Saturday, March 13 when two of the subjects fired shots at a Yakima County Sheriff’s deputy.
According to Yakima County Sheriff’s officials, it is the third time in the last nine months individuals have fired shots at a Yakima County sheriff’s deputy.
During the latest incident near Toppenish, a sheriff’s deputy responded to a residence in the 200 block of Willowtree Lane at 12:13 a.m. after a suspicious vehicle was reported driving repeatedly past the residence. After locating the vehicle, the deputy attempted to stop the car. The driver failed to stop, but continued to drive slowly while two subjects leaned outside opposite sides of the vehicle and fired multiple rounds at the patrol car.
The deputy maneuvered his car to avoid gunfire and high centered the car on the narrow dirt road. The suspect vehicle fled the area and turned down McDonald Road at a high rate of speed, while the occupants continued to fire rounds at the patrol car.
Numerous officers from several agencies responded to the area and conducted an extensive search, but were unable to locate the vehicle. The 2001 Chevrolet Malibu, registered to a Toppenish resident, was discovered engulfed in flames 45 minutes later on Harrah Road south of Fort Road.
K-9 officers were unable to locate the suspects in the car.
The sheriff’s deputy was uninjured.
Yakima County Sheriff’s deputies are continuing to investigate the case. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Yakima County Sheriff’s office at (509) 574-2500.
