Zillah will host its Community Day celebration on Saturday, May 8. Activities at the city’s Stewart Park will begin early – the Zillah Lions will host a breakfast at 6 a.m. The annual community parade will begin at 11 a.m. in downtown Zillah. Zillah resident Laura Vangstad has been selected as the grand marshal of this year’s parade. The parade will also be the initial appearance of the new Miss Zillah and her court. The parade will travel from the 100 block of First Avenue to Fifth Street and Second Avenue. The park’s Cook Shack will be open at noon, offering a variety of food.
An afternoon of fun for children and adults will include more than 10 games and contests.
Events will include a Toddler Trot and Diaper Dash, Stackum contest, Ugliest Dog contest, Keg toss, Sack race, Egg toss, Chug a Mug of Rootbeer, Wheel rolling contest, Get Nailed event and Horse shoe pitching.
Two special events at this year’s Community Day celebration will be a Valley Has Talent contest, a take-off of the popular TV series at 3:30 p.m. and the Zillah Best Apple Pie baking contest.
For the best pie contest, participants must bake two identical pies that will be judged on their appearance, crust, filling and flavor/taste. Following the judging, the pie will be sold by the slice, with proceeds to benefit the Special Olympics. The top three pies will be part of special afternoon pie auction, along with the crowing of the Apple Pie queen and her princesses. Top prizes are $100 cash for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third. Pie entry registrations were due on May 4.
