Those who use Toppenish parks may soon see improvements in some of the facilities at Lincoln and Olney parks.
The Toppenish City Council heard a report from the Public Safety Committee recommending that the gazebos in those two parks be rebuilt or replaced.
City Manager Bill Murphy said the structures are badly deteriorating.
He said temporary repairs have been made by city crews, but the gazebos remain a major safety issue.
Removal of the structures is not an option, Murphy said, because they are frequently used by park visitors.
He said he will get estimates for repair or replacement of the gazebos and present them to the full council for their consideration.
In other council action, Public Works Director Lance Hoyt presented proposed changes to the city’s six-year transportation improvement plan, which includes five street improvement projects.
Those are improvements to East McDonald Road, L Street, Franklin Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, and Second Avenue.
These projects will become part of the county plan which will be submitted for funding for 2011 through 2015.
The council also heard presentations from City Planner Bill Rathbone and Special Projects Assistant Tom Kehm regarding the status of housing improvements in the city.
Toppenish is part of a county consortium that applies for federal grant money to rehabilitate blighted properties and help provide affordable housing for renters or homes for private ownership.
Plans call for purchase of up to six blighted properties which can be demolished and new housing units built on the property.
Funds can also be used to rehabilitate existing housing.
The available funding must be obligated by the end of September, however, the work is not required to begin that soon, Kehm said.
The next regular meeting of the council will be July 12, at 7 p.m. at the Toppenish city hall council chambers.
