Toppenish City Council has formally adopted changes to its municipal statutes to incorporate recent state-mandated updates to both building and housing codes and administrative standards.
The action took place at the Council’s regular meeting July 12, and the changes were incorporated in an ordinance that replaced the uniform housing code and the uniform code for the abatement of dangerous buildings with the international property maintenance code, and made changes to administrative provisions and administrative standards for consideration of building permit applications.
City Planner Bill Rathbone said Washington requires cities and counties to adopt standards set by the International Code Council.
Those codes are regularly updated, and the state and municipalities may also amend some of the codes.
Rathbone said cities can amend codes to make them more strict than the ICC.
He also said that codes relating to administrative functions can be easily amended as well.
The City of Toppenish amended its code to allow appeals of decisions of the Building Official to be heard by a hearing examiner rather than a board of appeals, as is called for by ICC.
Rathbone said the amended code ordinance is available at city hall, and he can discuss those codes with individuals who are interested.
He can be reached at (509) 865-6319.
