Featured artist Deb Owens will headline the 13th annual Toppenish Western Art Show at Railroad Park this weekend.
The three-day event will attract artists from around the Northwest, who will offer their work to area art lovers throughout the show and in the art auction on Saturday, Aug. 21.
Owens’ graphite drawing, “Mondays,” will also be auctioned on Saturday.
Owens was born and raised in New Mexico and moved to Washington’s Columbia River Gorge area in 1979.
Her works have been exhibited in several competition shows and have won numerous awards from the Society of Washington Artists and solo shows.
She is also featured in “Artists of the West,” a book released in 2008.
Show hours are Friday noon to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Artists will be giving demonstrations all day Saturday and their works auctioned at 5 p.m. The show proceeds will provide an art scholarship.
The 2010 annual $1,000 scholarship will go to Yoni Rodriguez, who distinguished himself artistically, particularly during his senior year in high school, during which he created artwork that was selected as winner of the Superintendent’s Choice award in the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction art show.
The win marked the first time any school had won the award two years in a row in the event’s 37-year history.
His winning entry was titled “Divine Adolescence,” and was purchased by OSPI to be displayed in the foyer of the Olympia office for a year.
Presentation of the scholarship will be made to Rodriguez on Saturday.
During the show, there will be two free art classes for youth on Saturday at 9 a.m. open to everyone.
Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.
There will be two artists teaching classes on Indian designs and painted rocks.
Whitefoot is from Harrah and is back by popular demand, this year using crayons to enhance Indian designs and symbols.
She has also been exhibiting her works at the show since its inception.
Karen Gulley, president of the Toppenish Mural Society, will lead older students in painting river rocks using acrylics.
Gulley has participated in several Mural-in-a-Day events in Toppenish the first Saturday of June each year.
There is no charge to attend the show or the classes.
