Ballots for the upcoming Aug. 19 primary will be mailed out July 30, and in the Yakima County Commissioner, District 2 race, two of the four candidates will find their campaigns ended this August, when all the ballots have been cast and counted.
Only the top-2 candidates will continue their campaigns until the general election in November.
If you have questions for any of the candidates, you will want to attend a political forum next Tuesday, July 22, at 6:30 p.m., at the Wapato Community Center at 1009 S. Wapato Ave., in Wapato.
County Commissioner Ron Gamache, Wapato Mayor Jesse Farias, Union Gap Councilman Dan Olson and Toppenish farmer Kevin Bouchey will all be available for questions.
The candidates have agreed to a set of ground rules for the upcoming forum, including:
1. The public will be invited to the forum, but the public needs to submit questions in advance so that there is a cross-section of concerns covered.
The public can submit questions by emailing them to the newspaper, at RChandler@yvnewspapers.com, or by writing them down at the start of the forum.
2. A moderator will ask questions and allow up to three minutes for a response.
3. The moderator will ask pre-screened questions, partly to avoid long, 10-minute speeches by audience members. The newspaper will also post the “rules” for the forum in this newspaper.
4. Candidates will be free to mingle with the audience afterwards to answer individual questions, as each so desires. There is no rule on how long a candidate needs to stay afterwards.
5. After a series of general questions for each of the candidates, there may be questions for a particular candidate, depending on what readers and the audience submit.
6. No banners or political signs will be allowed inside the building. We want each of the candidates to have political rallies, but not this night.
7. The purpose of the forum is to learn about each of the candidates, and to promote intelligent voting by the electorate. We know that as of Aug. 19, the campaign for this office will end for two candidates.
Cold water, coffee and donuts will be provided.
