Toppenish Community Hospital’s new podiatrist said she always wanted to be a doctor, and she always wanted to practice medicine in underserved areas.
That made the Toppenish area a perfect fit for Dr. Sunshine Brady-Thomas.
“I wanted to come back to the west coast,” said Brady-Thomas, who is from New Mexico, and attended medical school at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland.
She has opened her practice, Vintage Valley Podiatry, in the former office of Dr. Doug Shearer, adjacent to the hospital, but that location is temporary.
A new, 6,000 sq. ft. facility is under construction in Zillah, at 913 Vintage Valley Rd. that will eventually house Brady-Thomas’s practice, as well as two other specialists, one in internal-medicine and another in cardiology, orthopedics, or ear, nose, and throat, according to hospital assistant administrator Ron Gicca.
That facility, to be called the Vintage Valley Medical Center, is expected to open in February, if construction goes as planned.
Brady-Thomas said the goal of opening the facility in Zillah is to provide medical services to a wider area in the mid valley.
“There are lots of people that need help,” she said.
The new medical center will have a full lab, x-ray facilities, and a cast room, Brady-Thomas said.
She provides medical and surgical care of the foot and ankle, including diabetic foot care, wound care, sports-related injuries, and pediatric foot care for patients of all ages.
She said not all podiatrists do surgery, but she completed a three-year surgical residency at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia so she could provide that care.
Though she said her first name “has always been a topic of conversation,” Brady-Thomas sees it as an asset in her practice.
“I am a very happy person,” she said. “I think my name is very helpful. It works for me.”
Brady-Thomas works with Alicia Macias, Registered Orthopedic Technician and CMA.
Office hours for Vintage Valley Podiatry are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Appointments are available by calling 829-6940.
