Pastor Gary Conner of Zillah is a man who believes that actions speak louder that words.

“If you’re not practicing the gospel message, you’re just talking,” said Conner. “We wanted to share the message in our actions.”

He and members of the Christian Worship Center, Church of God, backed up that claim in the last few weeks in a very practical and visible way, by providing the manpower to help improve their community.

They spent about 100 hours painting Zillah City Hall.

“It was in horrible shape, paint-wise,” said Conner. “We wanted to do something for our city.”

Conner said he worked with six other individuals evenings and weekends to get the job done.

“We usually worked from about 5 p.m. until dark,” Conner said.

He said the job was complicated a bit when it was discovered that the exterior woodwork was in poorer shape than they expected, and soaked up a considerable amount of paint.

There were also some changes in paint color that were made along the way, he said.

The work on city hall wasn’t the first time his church had been involved in community improvement projects.

Conner said his church had painted the municipal pool house and had also helped make repairs to the pool.

The church also donated 11 feet of frontage to the city when the improvements to Cheyne Road were made, he said, which he thought was a fair exchange for the new curbs and lighting that the project brought.

“We’ve always had a good relationship with the city,” said Conner.

He said Zillah City Clerk Sharon Bounds is also a member of the church congregation, and she helps make church aware of areas in the community that might need attention.

“We kind of keep in touch with Sharon,” said Conner.

In addition to Conner, other volunteers who helped with city hall included Chuck Kelly, Dennis Grubenhoff, Steve Wangemann, Ben Comer, Kevin Clark, and Kyle Cramer.
