TOPPENISH - The 20th anniversary of the annual Mural Society Dinner and Art Auction, will be held Oct. 18, at the Toppenish Eagles hall.
The event begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour, inspection of the art, and a chance to meet the artists. Dinner will begin at 7 p.m., with the auction to follow.
“It’s our only fund-raiser of the year to finance mural painting and maintenance,” said dinner chairman Jim Flint. “We’ve always been very fortunate to have great support from the community for the event.”
Karen Gulley, Mural Society president, urged residents to buy their individual tickets now, while they last.
“We have a limited space and expect to sell out,” she said.
The dinner and auction will be held in the front room of the Eagles hall.
“The Eagles organization has been very generous to the Mural Society in offering the space to us at no charge,” Flint said.
In exchange, the Eagles will keep revenue from sales of wine, beer, and cocktails to help defray its expenses.
“We expect to paint our 71st mural this fall,” Gulley said.
A number of local citizens have donated funds to pay for a mural reflecting Toppenish’s rich history of an active polo organization. Polo games were played regularly at the rodeo grounds in the decades prior to the 1960s.
The Mural Society paints one or two murals a year, but now spends considerable money on maintenance—cleaning, repair, touch up, UV coating, and major refurbishing when weather or water damage requires it.
A number of local businesses and organizations support the annual dinner by purchasing tables of eight for $350.
“We still have a few tables left,” Flint said, “but we want to put aside an adequate number of tickets for individual sales.”
Those interested in purchasing a table can contact Flint at 945-6603, Bob Bell at 865-2837, or Mural Society director Susan Treneer at 865-3262.
Individual tickets are available at the Mural Society office for $35 each.
This year’s menu includes roast baron of beef, lemon pepper chicken breast, garlic mashed potatoes, seasoned green beans, salad, rolls, and desert.
Paul Newman will repeat as auctioneer. There will be a raffle of items donated by local businesses and individuals.
For more information, contact the Mural Society office at 865-6516 or the chamber at 865-3262.
