My name is William Lewis, a reporter who has just arrived from Pasco, Wash. I will be the Review Independent’s new sports writer and will cover youth sports in the communities of Zillah, Toppenish, Granger, White Swan and Wapato.
High school football, volleyball, soccer, cross-country, basketball and wrestling are all a part of my job description at the Review.
This isn’t the first time I’ve covered sports. I was a sports writer for a brief time in Prosser, Wash. in the summer of 2006, when Prosser Mustangs’ junior receiver, Cody Bruns, and senior quarterback, Kellen Moore, led their team to a Central Washington Athletic Conference League championship and were setting astonishing new records for high school football players in our state.
But writing the latest stories about local sports teams and athletes isn’t the only assignment I have come here to take on in the Mid-Valley. I will also explore what’s happening at local schools, K-12, in your communities, in addition to writing feature stories for the Yakima Valley Business Journal that profile the ongoing activities of local businesses in the area.
Just like football, I have also done a little reporting on both schools and business—as it relates to agriculture—at past publications in my home area, the Columbia Basin. Tutoring programs, extra-curricular youth activities and school scholarships are just some of the topics I wrote stories about while working in Othello, Wash. On the agricultural side, I freelanced articles about topics that ranged from wine making in the Walla Walla Valley to the rising price of white wheat on the world market.
Given that we are such an agricultural state, it never ceases to surprise me when I find many story ideas linking student learning with agriculture—either inside or outside of the classroom. I especially enjoy these kinds of articles.
I come from Eastern Washington University with a BA in news writing/editorial and a minor in technical writing. I look forward to meeting all of you—whether as sources or just new acquaintances, in the very near future.
