WAPATO — The Selah Vikings achieved a 5-2 victory against the Wapato Wolves in a Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) league girls’ varsity soccer match-up, held Saturday morning at Wapato High School.
The first half of the game was all Selah, with Viking midfielder Danna Johnson scoring the first goal of the game, along with a goal assist to forward Amber Gooch.
Vikings’ attacking midfielder Alexa dobbs scored a third goal to end the first half with a 3-0 lead for Selah.
In the second half, Selah’s Johnson and Gooch scored Selah’s fourth and fifth goals, respectively, and Vikings defender Audrey Hyatt saved an attempted goal by the Wolves.
In a desperate comeback attempt—and with only 10 minutes left in the game, Wolves’ center midfielder Bertha Valencia scored two impressive goals.
“She’s one of the top players—leading scorers on my team,” said Wapato Wolves Varsity soccer team coach Ruben Torrico. “We should have pushed a little harder in the first half,” Valencia said after the game.
“We started pressing harder in the second half, but it was just a little too late.”
Saturday’s match up puts the Wapato Wolves at a 2-3 record and the Selah Vikings at 4-1 in the CWAC.
